Do you mean that the corners would written 'on top' of the 
surrounding text? (Is that possible using the Qt and Xforms frontend btw?)

Are you trying to be difficult on purpose here?
You ignore the change in magnitude of how often it occurs (once every 20 
pages to a few times per page), and also the case of dialogs? If you are 
dead-set on using boxes, just say so ...
