I use LC_ALL=en_GB.UTF-8 LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 and it works fine with French documents. Try UTF-8. That, with LyX > 1.5.0. For the .bashrc, it should be ~/.bashrc. Otherwise, consider setting your global settings to some UTF-8 flavour, and you're OK. On Gentoo it's /etc/env.d/02locale. Regards, Liviu
