You can also overcome the problem using the following in the preamble:

\let\oldtextcolor\textcolor
\DeclareRobustCommand{\textcolor}[1]{%
  \lowercase{\oldtextcolor{#1}}}

Of course, this only works when all colors you use have lower case names.
