An analogy that should be understood by (almost) everyone visiting the
LyX site is the different layout of a web page versus the same content
printed on paper.

Yes indeed. However, a link to the Wiki Examples cannot replace the
screenshoot page - the latter beeing primarily for the prospective user who
cannot view the lyx sources in lyx. (Making a screenshoots out of a nice
example and present it together with a PDF of the output in the screenshoots
section if fine, though.

How about something like the following in the left menu column:

  Documentation> 
    Screenshoots                %  PNG and PDF of small examples
                                %  showing why WYSIWYM makes sense 
    Examples                    %  http://wiki.lyx.org/Examples/Examples
    Wiki                        %  http://wiki.lyx.org/
    LyX Guide                   %  PDFs of the Help>... guide chapters
                                   (maybe even a HTML version?)
