You do not need to use boot camp to use the proprietary ATI driver. You just need to boot using the BIOS and not EFI. You need to upgrade your firmware to have a BIOS. See [1]. Note that the proprietary driver is buggy (the kernel crashes after a few seconds using Google earth). I now use the framebuffer driver and am waiting for a better (free software) driver.
