Thanks for the helpful directions.

My aim was to have a debian installation on the USB key without touching
the Mac HDD. This will enable me to boot debian by just sticking the key
to an MBP (or even a plain Macbook but thats for later).

I do have the 1.0.1 firmware update and SMC update on the MBP. I am
currently using rEFIt to boot from the USB key. The USB key was blessed
not the Mac HDD. Would it be possible to do everything on the USB key if
I boot using the BIOS?
