I confirm the problem. Same thing on my Mac Book Pro.

It is not related to the hard drive but to the new timer
infrastructure inside the kernel (I guess). I guess it is the same
problem reported by some Mac OS X users. When the system is idle the
CPU is set in low power until something wake it. This happen at a low
enough frequency to have effect at an audible sound frequency.

You can avoid the noise by running something like "yes > /dev/null" for example.
