Donna,I was curious so I went to Languages and Regions and added Spanish. This also added the Spanish keyboard in Keyboard preferences. Then I went to menu extras and could not find the text input menu. That is because it changed to US which is still my preferred language. So this is where one can chnge the language on the fly. Typically with just one language one can go to the text input menu and bring up the character viewer and select those oddball symbols so no need for extra keyboards if one only needs to type in an occasional foreign language character.
As an aside I tested the option key and its fine. I am going to stop at that. (grins)
