Previously we have had problems matching the Google projection with other WMS projections. Well, after chatting with a Google friend I've discovered that people have reverse engineered Google's projection, and have created a new EPSG code for it. Apparently this code has been incorporated into Geoserver and Mapserver, so you can now request a WMS layer in the same projection as Google and therefore match a WMS layer with a Google Base map layer. Just use EPSG:900913 (note, the number looks very similar to EPSG:google).
