I agree with using less graphic organizers. I have found that some students used them, but nothing beats authentic literacy. I have journal writing as morning work everyday. I try to build in something that we are working on in reading, science, or social studies. I even add things we use in guidance. The more I teach emergent writing, the more I am convinced that students need many opportunities to explore writing before they are required to 'produce' something to be evaluated. I use my journals as a portfolio to show development. I am currently using the journals to model what a peer conference would look like. This is all going on in a Kindergarten classroom!
