Graphic organizers are overused. The point to graphic organizers is to scaffold
then take away as the structure grows stronger. Students should also be aware
that the goal is to monitor their own thinking and produce whatever it is they
need to organize their thoughts for writing. The point is to make student
independent thinkers.

I agree with using less graphic organizers. I have found that some students
used them, but nothing beats authentic literacy. I have journal writing as
morning work everyday. I try to build in something that we are working on in
reading, science, or social studies. I even add things we use in guidance.
The more I teach emergent writing, the more I am convinced that students need
many opportunities to explore writing before they are required to 'produce'
something to be evaluated. I use my journals as a portfolio to show
development. I am currently using the journals to model what a peer conference
would look like. This is all going on in a Kindergarten classroom!

I want to thank you all for taking the time to reply and for the valuable
information, recommendations, and mostly for your honestly. It was so kind of
you! We are also looking at "schoolwide" writing units. Has anyone heard of it
or is someone out there using this program? Again, I would appreciate any
information you can share, Make it a great week, Hillary
