Graphic organizers are overused. The point to graphic organizers is to scaffold then take away as the structure grows stronger. Students should also be aware that the goal is to monitor their own thinking and produce whatever it is they need to organize their thoughts for writing. The point is to make student independent thinkers.

I have found that some students used them, but nothing beats authentic literacy. I have journal writing as morning work everyday. I try to build in something that we are working on in reading, science, or social studies. I even add things we use in guidance. The more I teach emergent writing, the more I am convinced that students need many opportunities to explore writing before they are required to 'produce' something to be evaluated. I use my journals as a portfolio to show development. I am currently using the journals to model what a peer conference would look like. This is all going on in a Kindergarten classroom!
