I have looked at the Ogg Vorbis encoder (B2) and I have a couple of points to make
:

1] I think it is appalling that there is such little interest in this - it is a
viable alternative to MP3 - and
doesn't have the patent restrictions that our friends at Franhoffer put on it.
Sure, LAME is free,
but if you use it (commercially) you still have to pay to use MP3 technology.

2] The encoder is very slow, the quality *comparable* to MP3. I suspect both will
improve.

3] Documentation on Ogg Vorbis is very sparse. No info on how it actually works,
only technical
    specs on the bitstream etc.

I know there is an Ogg mail list, but I suspect that most LAME mail readers don't
look at it. Surely
some of the brains in LAME (effectively working for free for the benefit of the
Franhoffer group) would
feel more satisfaction from developing a real free format?
