First Lady Meets With NY Homeowners

ROME, N.Y. (AP) - A group of local residents asked Hillary Rodham Clinton on
Friday to help them fight land claims against their property filed by the
Oneida Indian Nation.

On the third day of her Senate campaign swing, Mrs. Clinton said she takes
``to heart'' the concerns of the homeowners.

``There should be some just and equitable solution that does not disadvantage
existing land owners,'' Mrs. Clinton said. ``And I hope that that comes to
pass.''

The Oneidas filed a lawsuit in 1970 seeking to recover 250,000 acres of lost
land. The Supreme Court ruled in 1985 that the Oneidas were entitled to
compensation because most of their land was seized in questionable
transactions with the state and private individuals.

Negotiations over a settlement stalled, and the Justice Department
intervened, siding with the Oneidas.

A handful of local residents carried signs outside Mrs. Clinton's campaign
event in Rome. ``Please help us, Mrs. Clinton,'' read one sign.

Told by a farmer that the homeowners feel threatened by the possibility of
losing land to the Oneidas, Mrs. Clinton said, ``I will certainly take that
to heart. I know this has been going on for 20 years or more.''

Tina Bombardo, who owns 26 acres in Verona claimed by the Oneidas, said she
felt Mrs. Clinton ``could help us resolve'' the issue.

``I'm a registered Republican, but I would vote for her if she would help
us,'' Bombardo said.
