But American Indian groups are calling it vile, arrogant and malicious. Those are some of the words in a letter to the Wiscasset School Committee, where sports teams have used the name ''Redskins'' for decades. David Spirit Bear Walton, a regional spokesman for the American Indian Movement, wrote that the ''malfeasant use of the word 'Redskins' is nothing more than a display of disgusting racism that only a racist could ignore.'' Walton is threatening to sue unless Wiscasset High School, and nine others from Old Town to Wells, change their team names by January. The reaction from the Wiscasset School Committee was strong. ''We didn't like being called racist,'' said Chairman Robert MacDonald Jr. ''I was pretty disgusted he would use that demeanor to get his point across.'' MacDonald, a Redskin himself in the late 1970s and early 1980s, said the symbol stood for strength and unity and was never meant to be a ''slang term'' for another race. But he said he now understands how it would offend American Indians.
