Akwekon Tekwanonweratons (Greetings to you all)!

Saturday, October 23, 1999 is "National make-a-difference day" in the US,
so beginning at 8:00 a.m. Friday, October 22 to 8:00 a.m. Sunday, October
24, 1999, the Akwesasne Broadcasting Society and CKON Mohawk Nation Radio
will be hosting a radio-a-thon for the benefit of the Akwesasne Freedom
School. The Akwesasne Freedom School is currently constructing a new
building to ensure an environmentally safe learning place for the students
in grades 7 & 8. Their old classroomm is really an old bakery, which has
been falling apart and not very environmentally sound.

The Akwesasne Freedom School is an independent pre-K - Grade 8 school
located on the Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne. The school recently
celebrated 20 years since establishment by Mohawk parents who wanted to
reassume responsibility for the education of their children. It is a full
Mohawk language and immersion program. It is also the first school to
implement an year round school calendar. The students & teachers attend
school in increments of 6 weeks on and 2 weeks off throughout the year.
Funding for the school comes primarily from donations, community
fundraisers, and foundations. The school does not seek or receive federal,
state or government funds.
