PermaCultures

A new series of residencies, talks, workshops and training opportunities
exploring the convergence of art, media culture, technology and
sustainability.

Open call for PermaCultures Residency #02

A portmanteau of ‘permanent agriculture’ as well as ‘permanent culture’,
PermaCultures takes its name from a term coined by Australians Bill
Mollison and David Holmgren to describe their methods for sustainable
agricultural design. From Mollison and Holmgren’s methods developed a
general philosophy for sustainable design around the interconnection and
relationships between differing areas or objects. It alludes to
networked technologies through 'perma' (permalinks) prefix and has the
aim of exploring the impact and sustainability of creative technological
practices.

Media technologies hold extensive democratic potential, posing
interesting questions to existing systems such as finance, politics,
ownership and art. The Internet is no longer a child and as such is
establishing its own ‘identity’ and role for the long-term future. Its
networked distribution models have significantly affected our experience
of the world around us. Television, news, and art are being challenged
by digital space relationships. Video is now distributed predominantly
on the web, election campaigns are being orchestrated through grass
roots web involvement and Open source software is seriously questioning
the future of software giants. Media Technologies can be the interface
between people and systems to open up a more democratic, efficient and
sustainable future. Alongside this, the continual drive for
technological development, ‘mastery’ over nature and our insatiable
desire for techno-gadgetry could be seen as key contributor to the
current poor health of world eco-systems.

PermaCultures aims to bring together artists, technologists, ecologists
and creative people, both young and old, to work alongside each other
and examine collective differences and cohesions that can build future
sustainable relationships. SPACE Media would like to hear from anybody
interested in the PermaCultures programme in any capacity. This includes
but not exclusively, undertaking residencies, giving talks or workshops
or simply to exchange ideas and add to an interesting debate. Please

PermaCultures Residency #01
The PermaCultures series opens with a residency period for Simon
Blackmore, an artist based in Manchester who works with The Owl Project
as well as an individual artist. Simon will be in residence in the Front
SPACE for the whole of March developing a project that explores
relationships to passive data and the relationship of ‘data forms’ to
organic shapes. He will be developing a drawing device from an open
source rapid prototyping machine to convert electro-magnetic activity
(such as electro-magnetic frequencies as used by mobile phones) into
beautiful animated drawings.
