My first major hay-fever attack came on a school trip to Chesters fort. Although I had been a sniffely and sneezy youth up to that point, the streaming eyes and waterfall nose generated by the Northumbrian grassland on that day entirely surpassed all my previous experience.

Perhaps the Northumbrian plaid was developed as a large scale handkerchief.
