Sunset was at around 7:12 PM on Tuesday (7:08 today, Thursday) and the criterium must run until 7 or 7:30 PM. Regarding these recent accidents, whether a rider is wrong or right doesn't matter much to you when you die or are seriously injured. I assume that on a bike I am invisible, yet totally vulnerable at all times. I never pass a moving vehicle on the right or stop beside a long vehicle at a corner because I assume that they will turn right whether they signal or not. When people cut me off or don't see me, I know that it's hard for motorists to see us and I'll mention in as friendly a manner as possible that they should watch for cyclists, because getting hostile is counter-productive.
I hope that all of us cyclists will ride with care while rightfully staking their claim to use of the roads. One of the reasons I've driven to the crits is because I just don't want to chance getting hit in the dusk/dark while riding home. Lights or not many drivers find us invisible as the darkness settles. Did Phil have lights on? Hopes and prayers for a full recover.
