It depends on your graphics card. Old ones don't (they didn't when I
wrote that, which I suppose is part of the reason). Recent ones do, IIUC.

Yup.
One idea would ne to add an extra viewport on top (that is rendered
_after_ the image-grab, but shown to the user) which just holds a
screenshot (to show the same picture) or a placeholder image ("printing
in progress") or somesuch.
