sorry you wasted time on this issue. I've committed a fix that emits a
(hopefully) clearer message.

I do not know the reason, but I guess there is/was some issue that
caused trouble.
I don't have access to a OS X test system, so I can't investigate this
directly. If you want to give it a try just change the above line to
IF(NOT QT4_FOUND) [1] and rerun 'cmake .' in your build dir, I can try
to help with issues you may run into, but I don't have much experience
with apple systems.
