Hi there,

We should just be thankful that the considerable work of Fermat, Poincare
and others existed in a time where nobody had found a way to own a plot of
algebra. Without their work, or with an inability to use their work, R, S,
and A would have been unlikely to derive the simple algebraic identities
that they did. (Damned useful identities I'll admit, but they remain very
natural deductions from existing algebra which evolved a long way without
anyone claiming to own any of it).

Your regard of a basic algebraic equation (or two) as "property" that
cannot be used without the exchange of money is, to me, absurd - of course
there is a massive legal framework agreeing with you so there we have it.
I'd agree that to claim R, S, and A didn't come up with the work would be
as injust as theft, but the fact that simply applying their (extremely
basic) mathematical deductions requires the paying of an enormous fee is
amongst the more absurd things on this earth.

Thank god finite mathematics, complexity theory, logic and linear algebra
were all mature sciences before a warped enough society could emerge that
might have otherwise classified the lot as intellectual property.

Regards,
Geoff
