RAMADI, Iraq (Reuters) - A suspected suicide car bomb exploded outside a
U.S. military base in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi on Thursday,
witnesses said.

A thick cloud of smoke rose from the site of the blast and there was an
exchange of gunfire immediately afterwards, the witnesses said. There
was no immediate information on any casualties.

U.S. military officials were not reachable for comment.

The U.S. military has a small fortified camp in the center of Ramadi, an
unstable city effectively in the hands of insurgents. The camp is
frequently attacked with gunfire and mortars.

Earlier, two Iraqis were killed in a gunfight in the city, which is
about 110 km (68 miles) west of Baghdad and is the capital of the
volatile Anbar province.
