Four were killed by roadside bombs in eastern Afghanistan - three in a single attack and one in a separate bombing. The fifth American was killed in an attack in southern Afghanistan, the details of which were not immediately clear. The deaths followed <http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/31/world/asia/31military.html> two roadside bombings in the southern part of the country on Monday that killed seven American personnel members and a coalition soldier whose nationality was not immediately released. Twenty coalition service members, 19 of them Americans, have been killed in Afghanistan, mostly in the south, since Saturday. Witnesses near the city of Kandahar reported seeing a large blast strike an American military convoy on Monday afternoon on Highway 1, just west of the city, which has been the focus of increased American military operations in recent months. An American armored vehicle was destroyed. It was not known precisely where the second bombing took place, and officials declined to specify whether the victims were <http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/m/us_mari ne_corps/index.html?inline=nyt-org> Marines or soldiers. Both are operating in the area. Earlier Monday, in the eastern city of Jalalabad, a district governor was killed by a car bomb. The bomb had been planted in the vehicle of Said Ahmad Pahlawan, chief of Lalpor District in Nangarhar Province, and exploded just outside the Jalalabad office of the governor of the province, said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, the governor's spokesman. The bomb also wounded four of the governor's security guards, he said. Also Tuesday, a gunman opened fire on a busload of Afghan Supreme Court clerks on the outskirts of Kabul, killing 3 and wounding 12. Richard Berry contributed reporting from Paris, and an Afghan employee of The New York Times from Nangarhar Province.
