Every USB to serial adapter I've ever tried with Linux worked without doing anything more than plugging it in. The only time I ever had an issue with one was when I was using it to communicate with a DS2408 device I built to control propane burners. Ignition was achieved with a barbecue igniter, which generates very high voltages. When it was active it interfered with 1-wire communication. As far as I know, Wiznet (http://wiznet.co.kr/) manufactures several devices that can do that with a single chip. As far as drivers in Linux, that's beyond me.
