Is there any other approach (secure) instead of using the Shared Key. I don't know exactly how it works in Azure, but for what you say I imagine that each call needs to know the key, so if the code is done at the client side (JavaScript, Silverlight, etc) then the client needs to know your key, which might pose a security issue.
I had a similar problem with a Facebook app. It would obviously scale better if the Sivelirght app could do the call directly better avoiding hits to my server....
