My old Polaroid SS 35 Plus developed a problem in the main board after
about 18 months use. The controller of the stepping mechanism failed and
the system couldn't hold levels so it could only rarely successfully calibrate
itself and would spit out SCSI errors, a real pain. The remedy required
replacement of the unit at considerable cost, it didn't just stop working either
it acted strangely at first then became much worse over time :-(

I got my SS4000 before the Silverfast software came bundled as standard,
the native Polaroid software is hideous, I hope the software for the new Nikon
scanners has be well thought out and made usable at last.
