Thanks, Godfrey. I had a hunch. The word objective is very rarely used for a photographic lens these days, isn't it? In Denmark the word lens (linse) is used increasingly often for a photographic objective. The next generation will not know "objective" as anything photographic. In Germany it's still "Objektiv", though.
The lens, through which your look into the viewfinder, is called the ocular - or the eye piece. The lens which is pointed at the subject is called the objective!
