I was in the US Navy stationed in Pt. Mugu, CA, where we deployed each year to New Zealand and then on to Antarctica. That was my second year in the squadron and was the year we pulled three planes out of the frozen ice. Two had crashed on the same day the year before and the third was from numerous year earlier. I remember leaving New Zealand in late March the following year thinking I was leaving the worst tour of duty I had experienced in over 20 years service at that time. Now that I look back on the experiences and friends I made, especially in New Zealand, it is one of my bright spots! My heart has been especially heavy these past few months with the quakes in New Zealand and Japan. Christchurch was our main base for staging operations to Antarctica. I had spent several years in and out of Japan in the late 60's, and my wife and I had spent several mini vacations there from Guam.
