Do you twirl the glass clockwise or anticlockwise?

Don't think or it as "diluting," but as enlivening. Remember, the
distillers dilute the wiskey when they barrel it. Adding a bit of room
temperature water to the glass simply wakes up the taste and aroma of the
wiskey.

I've taken my bourbon both ways, enjoy them both but generally prefer not
to dilute, especially the really good stuff.

Ditto. I drink both scotch and bourbon over ice. If it's very special,
I'll try some neat but only to get an undiluted sample.

There was at one time, a radio program on the CBC called Ideas. One
Robbie
Burns day there was a series of interviews with cellarmasters from the
major distillers in Scotland.
Every single one of them indicated that whisky should be diluted somewhat
with water. They all had their own recommendation regarding how much,
varying from 25% to 50%, but the message from each was the same.
I don't know if it's the same for whiskey, but I do find I prefer bourbon
over ice rather than neat.
