Fyi,



The international convention of tonnage measurement of ships 1969, the 
convention mandated a transition from the former measurement of Gross Register 
Tonnage (GRT) and Net Register Tonnage (NRT) to Gross Tonnage (GT) and Net 
Tonnage (NT).

The tonnage determination rules apply to all ships built on or after july 1982. 
Ship's built before that date were give 12 years to migrate from their existing 
Gross Register Tonnage (GRT) to use Gross Tonnage (GT) and Net Tonnage (NT).



Both GT and NT are obtained by measuring ship's volume and then applying a 
mathematical formula. 

GT is based on the moulded volume of all enclosed spaces of the ship and is 
used to determine things such as a ship's manning regulations, safety rules, 
registration fees and port dues  whereas NT is based on the moulded volume of 
all cargo spaces of the ship.  

In addition a ship's NT is constrained to be no less that 30% of her GT.

The older GRT is a measure of the volume of certain enclosed spaces.



Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) is a measure of how much weight a ship is carrying or 
can safely carry. It is the sum of the weights of cargo, fuel, fresh water, 
ballast water, stores/provisions, passengers and crews.

The term is often used to specify a ship's maximum permissible deadweight, the 
DWT when the ship is fully loaded so that its plimsoll line is at the point of 
submersion, although it may also denote the actual DWT of a ship not loaded to 
capacity.



Resume of  the above explanation, both Gross Tonnage / Net Tonnage are 
measuring a ship base on her moulded volume but Deadweight Tonnage measuring 
how much weight of a ship can carry with safely.

So it is possible if a ship has value of Gross Tonnage greater that Deadweight 
Tonnage.
