  I suppose the first must just make sure not to flatten the %hash:

$leaf_value = [.{}] \%hash, @keys; # %hash .{$key1} . {$key2} ...

  But what's wrong with the second?

$propped = [but] $value, @properties; # $value but $prop1 but $prop2 ...
