Hello,

A wild guess: Maybe the pendant is a hair locket and the fibres leftovers of
degraded hair? We have several of these in our collection (example below). The
reason why the hair is degraded would not necessarily need to involve pests.
Light damage and inappropriate relative humidity might be the cause.

Subject: [pestlist] Mystery fibers

Group,

I was presented with the attached photos this morning depicting what appear to
be clusters of fibres inside a pedant-type object. I would love any insight you
can offer as to pest-related possibilities for how or why these fibers got
where they are. There is a small crack in the metal behind the stone that would
provide an entry point for very small insects. However, I did not notice any
material that appeared to be frass or shed larval skins, which is usually
present when activity is noted.

The scale of the photos is approximately 15x and 20x.

Thanks,

Ryan Jones
