Ammonia is DEFINITELY NOT A GOOD IDEA. Ammonia can be used as a paint stripper - try some on an old cabinet to see what it does... it will remove old varnish, shellac, plastic finishes, etc. Not a good thing on celluloid, wax or shellac records.
