Add to that the money Reader's Digest gave him for the "European of the
Year" Award, and that's a hefty chunk of change, not to mention his salary
at Transmeta. Still doesn't approach Bill Gates level though.
Aren't most honorary degrees "Doctor of Laws" (Ll.D? DL?) rather than Ph.D?
I know the honorary degrees that UP confers almost every commencement are
"Doctor of Laws". Might be different in European Universities though... In
which case, Linus' Ll.D would mean Lots and Lotsa Dough!
But as was commenting in a previous thread, it seems that the "dropouts"
become the people who make (and take) the most money (Gates, Ellison) but
those who go on to higher studies (Torvalds, Thompson, Ritchie, Kernighan)
are the ones who create something useful and give it out to the world for
free. Is there something about staying in an academic environment that
makes a person more inclined to give freely and share?
Actually, when you think about it, the products that result from research
in government funded universities and institutes have already been "paid
for" by the people, through their taxes. Just the same way that the
Filipino people subsidised my Medical Education, and for which I'm still
paying back by being in government service.
