People... Linux is NOT a kernel, linux IS an OS.
If you dont want to believe me, at least pls read the 1st page of
www.kernel.org to enlighten you.
        A few lines from www.kernel.org:

1)What is Linux?
Linux is a clone of the operating system Unix, written from scratch by
Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across
the Net. It aims towards POSIX and single UNIX Specification compliance.

2)New to Linux?
If you're new to Linux, you don't want to download the kernel, which is
just a component in a working Linux system. Instead, you want what is
called a distribution of Linux, which is a complete Linux system.

A few more explanations from me.

A kernel is the core of an operating system (OS). The OS manages the
resources of a system. The resources are the memory, cpu cycles, hd,
mouse, tty, etc. The main task of managing the resources includes
scheduling the processes which is a big topic by itself and this is where
you get two variants of Linux. One is a non-real-time Linux, the one we
normally download from debian, redhat, etc. The other one is a real-time
Linux which you can download from www.rtlinux.org/com. Both of them are
Linux but they differ in the nature of their kernel.

Now, I do not want to be sarcastic as much as possible and I do want to
enhance this LINUX mailing list. So, if we do not know the difference of
a kernel and an OS, we are big trouble here.

If you are not really convinced despite all these explanations, pls buy a
book on operating system or real-time systems to get a clearer picture of
what Linux really is.
