Just as a side note on this. The Red Hat 7.1 SLOC counts show that
kernel 2.4.2 has 2,437,470 source lines of code
(http://www.dwheeler.com/sloc/redhat71-v1/redhat71sloc.html). That's
a monolithic kernel. I have the feeling that Andy Tanenbaum's long ago
arguments against Linus' monolithic design of Linux are going to start
to haunt Linux in the near future, because a monolithic kernel is
inherently less scalable than a microkernel. I hope that the Hurd
gets up to speed soon. It can very easily steal code from Linux
itself because they're both GPL-licensed anyhow!
Linux may be well-suited to small to medium-scale systems where the
speed advantage of a monolithic kernel is greater. For larger, more
distributed systems a microkernel has a distinct advantage, so I think
both projects can coexist peacefully in the end.
