Run them with pythonw, rather than python. The former has some glue that is needed to get window events into PyQt.

Yes, that did the trick. canvas.py works and looks really good. Again, I fired up my most complex app - it's not much of a looker on MacOSX. All the fuctionallity seems to be there though.
