Can you check what version of the Quartz Composer.app you have?

There was a bug like this which was an observer not getting unregistered when
you closed the window, but that should be fixed in QC Version 4.6.1 (151.2). I
think the interaction there was if you had the parameter view open on either
the editor or the viewer. If you're seeing this crash on a newer version, I'm
afraid there isn't a bug tracking it and I'd appreciate if you could file one.

Thanks!
