Josh Turner Launches Scholarship Fund
Fri. November 07.2008 4:23 PM EST

Josh Turner has launched a scholarship fund to provide assistance to high
school students who hope to pursue a career in the arts and entertainment
industry. The fund, administered by the Community Foundation of Middle
Tennessee, will initially be awarded to a graduating senior from the 2009 class
of his alma mater, Hannah-Pamplico High School in Hannah, S.C. The recipient
will attend a post-secondary school with a substantial arts curriculum. At his
concerts, Turner has been selling bracelets with the lettering, "JT Fund for
the Arts." Turner, who grew up in rural South Carolina, said, "I attended a 1-A
school, and there were only 75 people in my graduating class. ... We had
academic and sports programs, but we never had a consistent music program. We
would have a band one year, and a chorus one year, but nothing ever lasted." He
said his experience at Nashville's Belmont University and a subsequent
conversation with his wife Jennifer "inspired my idea to start a scholarship
fund that would jump-start high school students into a future in the music
business."

Willie Nelson Seeks Obama's Support of Family Farmers
Fri. November 07.2008 4:23 PM EST

Farm Aid president Willie Nelson has sent an open letter to Barack Obama to
seek governmental support of the organization's Good Food Movement which raises
awareness about the benefits of food grown on family farms. Noting that the
initiative "has grown and thrived almost entirely without the support of the
federal government," Nelson added, "However, now is the right moment for the
leadership of our country to take a role in this important movement. In fact,
the future of our economy, our environment and our health demand it." Nelson
added, "Now is the time for our country to recognize and call on family
farmers' ingenuity, strength and value to our past and our future. We can have
strong local economies, green energy, a clean environment, healthy citizens and
good food. All of these start with family farmers. I look forward to working
with you to make this vision of a family farm system of agriculture a reality."
