I have not been very good at introducing interested people to OpenOffice, so that they stick with it. So take my apologies, if this is another fail attempt.

But lets go with another try. Hopefully it helps not only Idan Kashtan, but also every other interested volunteer that likes to contribute and is subscribed to this list.

So first of all we see everyone who wants to develop OpenOffice as equal. There is no Hierarchy whatsoever.

We function by meritocracy standards. You earn renown by doing competent actions. Not having competence is not negative. So you do not loose anything by asking and building competence, because building competence is a competent action.

I like to summarize this setup as meritocratic anarchic organization.

Our vision is to improve OpenOffice. Nothing more nothing less.

So first: Basic Infrastructure. The ASF uses the quite archaic tech of Email Mailing lists. We use it because they have proven their worth over a long period of time.

https://www.apache.org/foundation/mailinglists.html

Our main communication channel is d...@openoffice.apache.org. All important discussions are made on the dev mailing list.

We have also freenode channel: #dev.openoffice.org and a slack channel for faster communication. I have to check what to do to provide slack invites. AFAIK there are no restrictions if anyone of you have interest.

So first step in learning to code with OpenOffice is imho learning to build OpenOffice.

For building OpenOffice I recommend our guide:

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO#Step-by-Step_Building_Guide_for_Different_Platforms

The Operating systems matter:

OS2 I think is the most difficult followed by Windows, then comes MacOSx and the easiest I think is Linux. FreeBSD should be also quite easy to build.

Please take that into account if you run into issues.

Of course you can start your own way into AOO, the code is available on Github and you can create pull request any time as you like. We will review as soon as possible.

https://github.com/apache/openoffice

What to do on the code can be figured on Bugzilla: https://bz.apache.org/ooo/

But I usually do not know where to start so I have created a Task list on Jira https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/OPENOFFICE/issues/OPENOFFICE-76?filter=allopenissues

current activities are reflected here: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Improvement

If there are questions ask them. There are no bad questions. OpenOffice contributing to AOO is a challenge due to age and history of the project. We help as much as we can.

all the best

Hey, thanks :)

I'd like to contribute by fixing bugs and adding new features.
I mainly interested in coding, so whatever you need me to do that includes coding :).

Thanks,
Idan Kashtan.
