[24] How YOU can help US to help YOU again!
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 28, 2006 by ed:
We'll keep this short as we know some tire of our long requests.

The simple fact of the matter is that though this is a free United news
service, we CAN'T SURVIVE without covering costs, let alone hoping to develop,
grow and update one day!

We hope you like what we pride ourselves on being one of the best - continually
updated by a team of volunteers and contributors - news sites for United news
on the net. As well of course as the longest serving Utd fanzine (now 19 years
old! scary!).

But unless YOU help US Red News will not survive. RN wishes everything ran on
free air, trust us we do. But it doesn't. And we can't. We NEED YOUR HELP to
survive. To keep providing this news day in, day out and producing our main
focus - the fanzine. We're not after a major amount, not a pint of your blood,
less in fact than a pint of beer costs a month. Ideally we'd like you to take
out a subscription if you can't buy the mag at OT. £25 for a years mag AND free
web news to boot. That is very cheap. But buying a mag, or using our sponsors
(at the bottom of the page) helps. We are not joking, our survival depends on
you.

We had online hits from over 60 countries recently. But subscribers in only 12
of those. That's not a moan at our foreign readership, we realise there are
difficulties, we realise too that home or abroad people will just look away
now. But please take these appeals seriously. Hits on this site (where we don't
get a penny for) far, far outweigh fanzine readers - roughly 50:1

But without some of you supporting it isn't an idle warning to say the fanzine
- and the website - can't continue. One simple question - if we weren't around,
of course you'll get United news, but do you think it would be as substantial
as RN provides - EVERY DAY? YOU would miss out. And so would we...

We love the way some of you interact with the fanzine, and site, sending
e.mails to [EMAIL PROTECTED], contributing, sending gossip, stories, info and
helping with appeals. Thanks to all our loyal supporters. Who continue to stand
by us. And it's never too join in or too late to help us!

If you do want us to survive, please try and do you bit, every little helps,
nothing is too small an effort, and please understand why we have to
continually ask as we run a growing 365 a day news website news and forum
service, and fanzine, especially as more and more people use this site. We are
a very - and we mean very - small operation (with hopefully a loud voice!), not
run from any headquarters, but just a bunch of United supporters hopefully
providing news and comment and giving our readers a voice.

100% Independent. 100% Unofficial. Let's keep it that way.

[23] Reserves are Champions!

Posted Friday, April 28, 2006 by ed:
from official site

'United have completed a league and cup double after Aston Villa's defeat to
Leeds handed the FA Premier Reserve League Title to Rene Meulensteen's side.
Just 48 hours after the Reds clinched the Manchester Senior Cup, Villa slipped
to a 2-1 home defeat to make United the first team in history to retain the
Reserve League title. United will now face Tottenham next week in the National
Reserve League Playoff. . The champions' final league fixture is against
Liverpool on Sunday. The game, which kicks off at 1pm, will be shown live from
the Racecourse Ground on MUTV.'

from Pete our reserve reporter

'Aston Villa lost at home tonight and so Manchester United are CHAMPIONS of
the FA Premier Reserve League (North). As some of you may know the Reserve
team is my great love and so I'm thrilled to bits. My dad will be having a
pint in heaven as we speak and celebrating. He introduced me to the Reserves
when we had little money and he couldn't go to many away matches. For that, as
for everything in my Red life, I give him my love and my thanks. Keep the
faith, Peter '

and this comment from RN reader Robert

'You could do a lot worse than reprint the Red 11.org article on David

hypocritically-exaggerated youth policy---O'Shea was the last to come through
and his position looks precarious--or you can print this if you want!'

[22] More Sportinglife on Danny Wallace
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 28, 2006 by ed:
'Former Manchester United winger Danny Wallace does not believe his former club
will be able to delay Chelsea's Premiership title party.

The reigning champions need just a point from Saturday's Stamford Bridge clash
with Sir Alex Ferguson's side to make sure the in-form Red Devils will finish
behind them.

And Wallace, who had a four-year spell with United after a £1.2million move
from Southampton in 1989, is convinced Jose Mourinho's side will achieve
exactly that to enable the celebrations to begin at their opponents' expense.

He said: "For United it has been a poor season. Their fans want them to win two
or three trophies a season but they have won just the Carling Cup, although I
suppose one is better than nothing.

"The one they wanted and they won't get is the Premiership. Chelsea have
definitely secured that and have been the best team for a long time. It will be
a definite draw on Saturday."

United fans will be pinning their hopes on Wayne Rooney producing a
match-winning display, just as England supporters will soon be doing in the
World Cup finals.

Unsurprisingly, Wallace is a big fan of the 20-year-old, who has 21 goals to
his name already this season.

He said: "A lot of people have been building him up as the key player in the
World Cup but he is still only a kid so it will be a lot of pressure for him.

"But the season he has had has been so good he should be able to handle it. I
would pick him as my player of the year, although my daughter likes John Terry."

Wallace was a flying winger before his career was cut short in the mid-nineties
when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a condition that means he now
has difficulty walking let alone running.

Nevertheless the 42-year-old, who made a single England appearance in 1986, was
determined to raise awareness of MS by completing the London Marathon.

While most competitors completed the 26-mile course on Sunday, the
grandfather-of-one had to be content with a more sedate pace with plenty of
rest stops.

By midweek he had reached the 17-mile mark and was hopeful of arriving at the
finishing line round about the same time as the Chelsea match.

Looking back Wallace insists he has nothing but happy memories from his
football career.

Wallace said: "I had 15 great years of first-class football. I played for
England - and scored one goal on my debut - and I won a few medals as well. I
had a good career so I can't complain."

Wallace, who famously played alongside younger brothers Rod and Ray for
Southampton before leaving for Old Trafford, helped Ferguson to his first
trophy at the United helm, the 1990 FA Cup.

But while the veteran Scot went on to amass an enviable silverware collection,
Wallace's own career was affected as MS took hold and within two years of
leaving United he found himself an unsuccessful trialist at Mansfield having
endured a frustrating stint at Birmingham.

Yet the condition had remained a mystery for many seasons.

He said: "The reason nobody knew it was MS was because I was getting a lot of
injuries which were everyday injuries that footballers get, like calf and
hamstring injuries and a little bit of back pain.

"So I never knew until I went to a specialist and had it diagnosed. I might
have had it six years before it was diagnosed but the symptoms didn't come out
until a lot later when I was playing for Birmingham."

Wallace, who is a grandfather and lives in Manchester, has had to take regular
rest periods as he makes his way towards the finishing line opposite Buckingham
Palace that most competitors passed on Sunday in a matter of hours.

But Wallace has had help from a man who had already achieved a similar feat in
a previous marathon, former boxer Michael Watson, who suffered severe brain
damage in a middleweight title fight with Chris Eubank in 1991.

Watson joined Wallace, who can be sponsored on the dannywallacefoundation.org
website, at Canary Wharf yesterday and helped him reach the 16-mile mark.'

Danny Wallace is taking part in the London Marathon - help by sponsoring him.

RN recently interviewed Danny Wallace and we're delighted to offer our support.
You can too. Just log on to http://www.dannywallacefoundation.co.uk/

very best.

'THE FA are coming under increasing pressure from the BBC to scrap the
traditional 3pm kick-off for the Cup Final and replace it with a controversial
Saturday tea-time start. This season's finalists West Ham and Liverpool were
staging their own dress rehearsal in a Premiership clash at Upton Park last
night and their meeting at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on May 13 will
have a 3pm kick-off.

But such are the impressive viewing figures from Saturday's semi-final between
Chelsea and Liverpool, when 9.7million tuned into the 5.15pm start, that fresh
moves have been made by the corporation this week to move the final to a later
kick-off in future years.

By comparison, ITV's figures for their Champions League semifinal involving
Arsenal becoming the first ever London club to reach the European Cup Final
were 7.5million. BBC Director General Mark Thompson is behind the move,
preferring to show the big live sporting events at 'unorthodox times to
maximise audiences'. The FA's chief executive Brian Barwick has been made aware
of this. With his background in broadcasting and understanding of the BBC's
demands, television executives were hoping for his support.

However, Sportsmail has learned that Barwick, once the head of sport at the BBC
and ITV, is leading the resistance. He is concerned a later kick-off would
allow supporters more time for drinking in the build-up to English football's
showpiece event, a fixture that is screened to 500million viewers around the
world. There is also the issue of fans travelling home after the match. Sports
Agenda first revealed the BBC's initial plan two years ago, but they are
redoubling their efforts with their contract halfway through its four-year
term. It will be a 'key negotiating point' in future talks regarding a new
contract, according to sources. Barwick is not alone in doubting the plan. The
FA Challenge Cup Committee, who have the final say, are also opposed to it.'

'Despite fierce competition from Wes Brown, Vidic is expected to start
alongside Rio Ferdinand in central defence, while Sir Alex Ferguson will check
on the extent of a minor groin problem Gabriel Heinze picked up on reserve-team
duty on Tuesday before finalising his squad.

After sticking with Ruud van Nistelrooy for the excellent Easter Monday win at
Tottenham, Ferguson is once again faced with a striking dilemma as fit-again
Louis Saha is pushing to partner Wayne Rooney.'

“In football, loyalty and passion first and foremost come from the fans and
without acknowledging the fans, then you cannot expect them to become a
consumer or a customer. For far too long, football treated fans as fans and
forgot what customers wanted. Clubs have now started to think about fans and
the amount of money they bring into football. You have to engage them better
and give them better facilities. Fundamentally, I don’t think you can buy
success.”

(but spending £300m of Roman's money helps eh)

“The back-to-back Premiership title has only been done once in 15 years.
There’s no doubt about it – the team which wins the Premier League is the best

"It would be nice to play in the last couple of games. It is just a case of

Chelsea, maybe the manger might play a few youngsters in the final two games.
First-team wise, not much has happened for me since the Burton Albion game, so
at the moment it is about taking every opportunity I get to remind the manager
what I can do. Everyone wants to go out to Old Trafford and play with the best
players. It is the goal of everyone. You just hope your dream will come true."

'Arsenal striker and captain Thierry Henry was voted Footballer of the Year for
the third time in four years by the Football Writers' Association (FWA) on
Thursday.
The Frenchman, top scorer in the Premier League this season with 23 goals and
instrumental in helping Arsenal reach the Champions League final, was a clear
winner ahead of runner-up John Terry of Chelsea and Manchester United's Wayne
Rooney.
Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, the Professional Footballer's Association (PFA)
Player of the Year, finished fourth ahead of Joe Cole and last year's winner
Frank Lampard.
Henry also collected the award in 2003 and 2004, the first back-to-back winner,
and the first overseas player to win the award twice.
Paul Hetherington, chairman of the FWA, said: "Henry is a deserving winner in a
season when there have been several outstanding candidates, such as Terry,
Rooney and Gerrard.
"Henry's achievement ranks him up there as the greatest player in the 59-year
history of the award."

want to stop them having any more thoughts of winning the league. But I am sure
they will not come down to London for a nice stroll. We will have to work hard

[9] Letter to Red News
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 28, 2006 by ed:
Lottery Funding

Regarding the award of a £30,000 lottery grant to United. As you reported on
Red News on the 26th April, the culture secretary, Tessa Jowell, insisted the
grant was not a government decision. Speaking at culture questions in the
Commons on Monday 24th she sought to distance her department from the award.
However the cabinet minister defended the controversial move, aimed at
improving the physical fitness of the football club's staff, as a risk worth
taking. "This decision was taken by the regional sports board of Sport
England," she reported to MPs. The grant was designed to help "employers to
boost the levels of physical activity by employees" she explained.

Nuneaton MP Bill Olner challenged her on the payment, saying money going to a
"very rich organisation" could have been spent on more needy projects
elsewhere. I also read a report in the Sunday Telegraph which quoted one
Liberal MP as saying the award "must rank as amongst the most obscene ever
given out of lottery funds"

Then we learn that Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has stepped up his campaign
against this award. The Ribble Valley Tory has put down a Commons Motion on the
issue after his original criticism of the grant sparked a wave of angry
reaction. Mr Evans said: "The response I have received from the original story
has been overwhelming. Many people have written to me highlighting the anger we
all feel over the awarding of this lottery grant. "We all know of causes that
are desperate for lottery money and have been turned down, whilst the second
richest football club in the world receives £30,000 to get their staff fit.
This can not be fair."

Well how about these examples of lottery funds that have been well appropriated
over the last four years.

26th April 2006
The Champion chartered accountants firm has been given £35,744 to bring in a
female salsa teacher to take classes at the firm's headquarters in Salford

14th April 2006
The survival of an endangered beetle has been secured after being discovered in
the Vale of Evesham. The Noble Chafer is to have its habitat saved after the
Cleeve Prior Heritage Trust were given help to buy rare orchards by the
Heritage Lottery Fund. A grant of £16,500 from the fund will enable them to
purchase 2.5 acres of traditional orchards as a community orchard.

4th April 2006
The Bath-based American Museum has been awarded a £450,500 Heritage Lottery
Fund grant to create an exhibition celebrating 200 years of history. The
exhibition will feature a full interpretation of US history over a 200-year
period from colonialism to the 20th century. Why do we need that in England?

7th September 2005
£48,000 lottery award for a project for schools on gypsy and travelling
communities. The fund has given a grant to Hampshire Council for a project on
the traditions of travelling communities.

24th February 2004
The film, The Sex Lives of the Potato Men, which stars comedian Johnny Vegas,
was made by a West Midlands-based production company with the help of a
£900,000 award.

27th February 2003
The future of a Herefordshire-based magazine for travellers has been guaranteed
for the next three years thanks to a £200,000 lottery grant. The Travellers
Times was launched five years ago by the Hereford's Rural Media Company. The
magazine aims to highlight the concerns of the travelling community across the
UK.

4th December 2002
Work is being carried out to revamp one of Norwich's most unusual historic
buildings - a disused urinal. The 10-sided toilet on St Crispin's Road dates
back to 1919 and is believed to be the oldest surviving concrete urinal in the
UK. It has been granted Grade II listed status, and is now being renovated at a
cost of £27,000.

Other parties that have benefitted from lottery payouts include projects on
Nubian heritage, African dishes and a study on dreadlocks has also been
successful. Other controversial grants include £420,000 to help Peruvian
farmers to breed edible guinea pigs, £20,000 on teaching prisoners to play the
xylophone and an award of £17,500 for the fashion designer Vivienne Westwood to
do up her home.

And who gets all the bad press?

Cheers

Mick

[8] First chance to get RN125 and news from May8th-12th in our VIP area is now
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 28, 2006 by ed:
As our final RN of the season (125) is out for the Charlton game and ONLY
available for one league game (instead of 2, 3 or 4), we obviously need to make
sure we sell above average for one day to make up for lost readership for not
having extra selling days.

Though we know you love the website - and news - it is the mag which is the
backbone for the whole RN 'foundation' and as such, for the news for Monday May
8th through to Friday May 12th, you will ONLY be able to get the news for that
day, as it happens and throughout that day, if you help us and buy a mag either
at the Charlton game or in advance by mail order here.

The news will then be contained in our VIP forum for each day - and you can
gain access (current subscribers, etc are in there for a year and will remain
so) if you are not already by being put in there if you order the mag here in
advance - or by giving us the password when you buy it at the Charlton game
which will relate to a question from the mag (which we'll let you know what to
do nearer the time). Buy or pre-order the mag and entry to the VIP area is FREE.

For those who are never going to buy the mag, and always 'just lurk' you will
be given Mondays news here as usual...but on the Tuesday, and so on and so on
until the Saturday - which will be the Friday news! We realise some will go
elsewhere but it's an important/vital way of helping us, and giving us
something back...in return for you getting what we think is a great read in the
bargain (the mag) and of course news as it happens. The most extensive United
news on the web? We think so!

You can order mag 125 here, and if you're not already a member of the forum
just visit http://rnforum.co.uk/phpBB2/index.php
http://rnforum.co.uk/phpBB2/index.php and sign up and we'll do the rest.

[4] BBC on Keano game
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 28, 2006 by ed:
'Celtic star Roy Keane's testimonial against his former club Manchester United
at Old Trafford on 9 May is a 68,000 sell-out. An estimated 25,000 Celtic fans
will travel to the game - the biggest away support at a British game - and have
been allocated the entire North Stand. The match is expected to break all
records for receipts in benefit games. Keane, who is yet to confirm which team
he will play for in the game, will donate the profits to charity.'

NB. Still waiting to hear how much will go to charity though.
