Hmm, I've just downgraded to kernel 2.4.18-10 and it works. So I assume there seems to be an SMP bug in the more recent 2.4.18 versions from RedHat. By the way: kernel.org's 2.4.20 also works fine (but unfortunately doesn't work with RedHat's quota tools).
