I've been working, very slowly, on a geographic search engine and
geo-enhanced http. A demo is at geotags.com
Since it depends on specific HTML metadata, penetration is extremely
tiny. (With metadata, you hope the author read the instructions. With
data mining, you don't know that a zipcode, phone number, city etc.
the robot found on the page has anything at all to do with the page 
subject; it might be the author's, or where he went to school. Though it 
allegedly works quite well for some "accomodation" sites.)
One idea is for geo-enabled wireless PDAs or laptops, but it's
got hung up in the IETF Geo privacy committee (geopriv).
