Hi!

I'm using gentoo linux with Kernel 2.6.7-r12, ALSA and JACK.

For a tutorial, the term "snd-usb-audio driver" is probably not really
comprehensible, as most non-expert users (like me) probably will "make
menuconfig" without caring about the concrete modules. There I selected this
two modules for my (monolithic) kernel:

Device Drivers  --->
  Sound  --->
    Advanced Linux Sound Architecture  --->
      ALSA USB devices  --->
        <*> USB Audio/MIDI driver

Device Drivers  --->
  USB support  --->
    <*>   USB MIDI support

Having done that, my MidiSport 2x4 works both with ALSA directly and via
qjackctl as JACK client. Unlike MidiSport 2x2 or 4x4 there is no need for a
firmware upgrade (which was my main reason for buying a 2x4 instead of a
cheaper 2x2 ;-).

I own a Kawai ES-3 portable digital piano which is equipped both with midi and
usb connectors; there it seems to be not that simple. In the manual, pg. 28,
they write:

[For Windows XP/Me users]
A standard USB driver is already installed in your computer. You don't need to
install a new driver.

[For Windows 2000(98SE user]
You need to install the designated driver in your computer. Visit the KAWAI
web site at http://www.kawai.co.jp/english/Download1.html and donwload the
program.

[For Macintosh users]
Currently we don't have a USB driver available for Macintosh computers. ...

On my Windows2000/Linux dual boot machine, I used the driver from their
download page and verified that anything worked. It showed up as "KAWAI
USB-MIDI". Then I rebooted with Gentoo and Kernel 2.6.7-r12, but the Kernel
doesn't recognize the Kawai USB midi device, while the MidiSport 2x4 is
visible.

But I would not recommend to use USB-midi with the Kawai ES-3 anyway: a real
Midi interface is galvanically isolated via optocouplers, while USB is not.
If it was, USB devices could not be powered by the USB hub (afaik for midi
connections, both devices power their respective optocouplers for
themselves). Now when I connect the ES-3's audio output to my on-board
soundcard, I have a perfectly big ground loop: PC USB port -> USB cable
ground -> ES-3 ground -> sound cable ground -> PC audio port ground. The
result: ugly noise when recording something. I would have to cut the ground
wire in the audio cable to avoid that problem. With the Midisport 2x4, there
is almost no noise.

Regards
  Toni
