I read freedesktop from time to time but my policy is if it doesn't cause a problem I leave it alone. I must also admit that about nine months ago when I first got sucked in to packaging by taking over blender when nobody had the time to maintain it, rosegarden also, I didn't know much about packages except how to install them.
