Just to be clear, we're still talking about having instrument #10 default to 
being fixed, and fixing to channel 10, right?

That's a really novel approach.  Does this end up handling tempo ramps?  I'm 
not sure about that, but it seems like it should be able to handle everything 
else handily.

I'd like to see you have a go at that, and see how it turns out.  I'm thinking 
even if there are some problems, it's likely possible to massage around them.  
I can't think of anything I expect to be a complete show stopper with that 
approach.

Other opinions welcome.  It's a pretty big thing we're discussing.
