I think I agree with Chris in the case of a master audio track, but 
perhaps not in the case of a submaster.

With individual parts (be they vocal, or instrumental), I like to 
position them using the pan control.

But when I collect those parts together, recording them into an audio 
track, I am dealing with just the overall stereo sound.

In the case of a submaster, it might still be useful to position that 
audio track using the pan control.
