I saw your comment in bug #1393. I don't have the ID of the request/bug close at hand, but the gist of it was the user said when you're pasting near the end of a composition, the composition should expand automatically to accommodate what you just pasted.
That used to BE the behavior. I'm not sure whether it got broken or got disabled. It was kind of a pain in the ass, because if you were moving a segment near the end of something you had set to some specific number of bars for a good reason (ie. that's the number of bars in the score you're arranging), you could accidentally expand it by some random amount. Back in those days I was constantly having to go to reset the composition end again and again and again. It was very annoying, which is why I formulated the thought in passing that if I ever implement that feature request, I think I will do a pop-up nag dialog. "What you just pasted will not fit. Shall I resize the composition?" I seriously despise dialogs like that on general principles, and they're normally a horrible idea. "YES DAMN YOU TO HELL SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP!" The "[x] don't ask again" option on dialogs like that almost never works either. Alternative ideas are plenty welcome. Maybe a checkbox in the composition start and end dialog to say "[x] Do not expand beyond this point" or something like that. I think we still expand on recording (which is a very GOOD feature) and I suppose that's almost ALWAYS likely to be a good thing to do. (Being in the middle of a good improv groove and having the damn thing stop recording on you has lost a lot of my best musical ideas over the years). I'm sharing experiences, not dictating a definitive vision of what I see as the solutions. Let's discuss. AFTER I get some sleep. Woof. -- D.
