   As I was doing it I was thinking, "I bet I'm making a mess of this." 
  So, I'm not surprised at all.  The whole tr() thing is quite a mystery 
to me.  I assume there's some sort of processing step that somehow 
extracts them from the source.  Sounds like it has the potential to be 
quite unreliable.  I bet something like tr("Hello ""world.") will cause 
all kinds of trouble.
