This is a very frustrating error that I've had on numerous occasions 
with a myriad of different packages, I've never really known what I've 
done to resolve it however I've found that using python 2.6 and gcc 4.0 
seems to be much better for installing python packages, you can change 
the symlink /bin/gcc to point to gcc-4.0 (if you don't have it you can 
get it from the developer tools package).

After some googling, I see that others have gotten the same error, but 
I can't figure out whether it's my version of gcc, Python, or R that 
is causing the problem (the problem seemed to happen to other people 
with a variety of combinations of versions). Does anyone have any 
ideas of what I can try?
